global warming
Global warming is an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures generally predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting principally from pollution. Northeastern Illinois residents need to work together to mitigate pollution in order to decrease the effects of global warming on our environment.
Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce global warming:
- Turn off your computer
Shut down your computer when it’s not in use, and save 200 lbs. of CO2 from being omitted into the atmosphere each year.
- Fill the dishwasher
Only run your dishwasher when it’s 100% full, and save 100 lbs. of CO2 and $40/year.
- Carpool
Find friends to commute with instead of driving alone, and save 790 lbs. of CO2 and hundreds of dollars each year.
- Buy minimally packaged goods
Less packaging leads to a 10% decrease in your garbage per year. It could also save you 1,200 lbs. of CO2 and $1,000/year.
- Adjust your thermostat
By lowering your thermostat two degrees in the winter, and raising it two degrees in the summer, you could save 2,000 lbs. of CO2 and $98/yr.
