community activism
There are many ways to have your voice be heard in your community, whether it’s for clean air, safer schools, or basic human rights. Advocates cannot be clearly defined in one group; rather, they include all sorts of people, such as community organization leaders, elected officials, appointed board members, or your own community members.
- Influencing public policy
Write letters or send emails to your elected officials urging them to pay attention to your cause.
- Attending meetings that address your specific issue/cause
These meetings can take place anywhere from your community center to your living room. They should include a meeting agenda, detailed minutes, and a “plan of action,” or “next steps.”
- Holding events
Many times these events raise money for your cause, but partnering with national organizations is a good idea as well.
- Contacting your local media
Visit the website of your local paper, and find the editor’s name and contact information. Introduce yourself and present your case. Planning a face-to-face meeting is a great way to strengthen the relationship as well.
- Educate others
Post flyers, send emails, and tell your friends and family about your cause. There is strength in numbers—so urge your community to help support you in the activities listed above.
